Typical day

A Typical Car Track Day

7am onwards:
You should arrive at the circuit early, the organiser will likely have a cut off time about 15 minutes before the main driver briefing. At that point you’ve missed it and may have to wait until lunchtime.
Registration will include showing your driving licence and signing the disclaimers. You’ll get a wristband to show you’ve done this and perhaps (or for sure if the day is run in groups) a car sticker.

08:45
Now you must attend the mandatory drivers briefing which explains how the track day is going to operate, track etiquette and rules, a word from instructors and any other information.

09:00
Time to take to the track! Don’t worry if it’s your first day as this bit will be controlled speed sighting laps behind an instructor driven car. This gives you a chance to judge the conditions, get to know where marshals are and generally settle into the way the circuit flows.
Once that’s done (usually 20 minutes) any novice drivers attend an extended instructor led classroom briefing while the old hats and trackday legends get their first blast out on the track.

Sessioned/Grouped events

If you’re at a grouped event then

Open Pit-Lane
This basically means that there are no sessions. The signing on procedure still applies, but instead of all attendees being split up into 2 groups, the number of drivers is limited to just 1 group. The circuit opens at 09:00 for open lapping, closes at 13:00 for lunch re-opens at 14:00 and then finally closes at 17:00. You can come and go as you please but it is advised and left to the discretion of the driver to take regular and appropriate breaks during the course of the day. Vehicle wear and tear and driver fatigue is higher on a day like this so splitting the day up and taking regular breaks is strongly advised.

ARDS
During the course of both types of day instruction is available from qualified ARDS licensed instructors and can be booked in advance when booking your track day or at registration on the day. Instruction costs approx £30.00 for a 30 minute session. Steer clear of organisers offering “free instruction”. Do you really think a top instructor works for free? You’ll likely end up with the organisers friend or something.

Evening Sessions
Track days are normally mid week with the occasional weekend date. Trackdays are normally operated during the day, but there is a selection of evening events available. These normally start at 18:00 and run through to 20:00 depending on the light. The evening track days are normally limited in numbers, with either 2 sessions or an open pit lane. Keep an eye on the calendar for evening track days – they should be added soon.
