Insurance?

Trackday Insurance

Car Trackday insurance is proving to be a bit of a gray area. Unless your policy includes restrictions which mention the likes of ‘ Speed Testing ‘, your normal car insurance should cover you on track as track days are a non-competitive activity.  However, if you check with your insurers you’ll find that many will insist that it is a car club organised day, or that your excess will be increased dramatically.

Several cases have gone to the insurance ombudsman where insurers have claimed that policy holders were not covered for track days, with the policy holders winning their cases thanks to the lack of specific exclusions in their policies. What this has led to though is than now most road policy writers are amending their policies to include specific exclusion of trackdays.

In reality accidents are very rare. You are actually about 1000 times more likely to have a road accident on the way to a trackday than at a trackday. As you get your first few out of the way, you’ll likely begin to see less and less value or worry about insurance.

It all comes down to the regulations on the days specifically excluding timing and clearly defining policies such as overtaking on the track etc.
Remember, all trackdays are strictly non-competative events so the dangers are in fact minimised. The venues themselves are also designed for fast driving, unlike the roads!

Afew companies in the UK offer day by day insurance (Moris and CCI) though these are rare in other European countries. USA policies exclude trackdays, but you can actually get discounts if you’ve attended the instructor classes at accreddited organised trackdays.
